The Merseyside junior chess league had another round of fixtures yesterday at Merchant Taylor Junior Boys school which leaves just a couple of games outstanding for this season.

The title was decided yesterday with the tightest of outcomes possible at the top. Wirral Juniors and Liverpool Knights both finished the season with 13 points from a possible 14 points after drawing with each other early in the season and winning all other matches. Wirral scored 28.5 board victories through the season and Liverpool Knights 28.0

So by just half an individual game score Wirral Juniors are this seasons Merseyside Junior Champions! Congratulations Wirral Juniors! who will be awarded their winners trophy at the MCA general meeting on 23rd May 2018 at Aigburth Cricket and Bowls Club.

Liverpool won the title over Wirral Juniors last season in a very similar outcome with both teams last season also finishing on 13 points but Liverpool had the higher board count, so it is good to see Wirral get their reward this time around.

The Merseyside junior player of the Season award goes to Alex Griffith of Liverpool who scored 6.5 wins from 7 games, Congratulations Alex!

There are 3 runners up on 6 wins:
Zac Paulsen (Wirral ) 6/7
Marek Kosinskij (Liverpool) 6/6
Luke Maher (Liverpool) 6/7 - Luke won player of the season last year.

It is clear to see all teams have enjoyed the league and improved their play this season and all teams have at least drawn a match which is great!

It seems the number of players taking part is increasing year on year so we have an ever increasing number of junior chess players coming through the ranks for Merseyside in the future which is brilliant for chess and all Merseyside clubs.

Thanks to all children, parents, organisers, helpers and schools for making the league special and enjoyable for all!

There are still a couple of games in the mid table to be finalised as stated and the League table and individual results can be viewed on the Merseyside Chess Association website here:
